Marshall Library

Books

Borrowable books

Borrowable books are located on the first floor of the library, in the gallery and in the basement. They are arranged by subject according to the library's own classification scheme. 'Short loan' and 'Open Shelf' books are shelved throughout the library, whereas Basement items (classmarks start with B) are only available on request. Books in the 'Reserve Collection' are kept behind the Issue Desk - please ask for them.

Multiple textbooks

The Library has up to 40 copies of certain textbooks (these are usually also 'Short Loan' items). We are keen to buy more copies, and monitor usage; however, please let us know if you would like us to buy more copies of a specific textbooks.

Archive and Rare Books

The majority of the 'Archive Books' and 'Rare Books' were part of Alfred Marshall's; however, as more economists and other scholars have donated books to us the collection has somewhat broadened in its provenance. The Marshall Library does not actively develop this collection (buy purchasing further pre-1900, or rare books), but there are in the region of 3,000 books which are not borrowable, and have either been used by scholars and then donated to us. In June 2015 and some time before 1994, rare books were transferred to the University Library. The older deposit of Marshall Library books numbered about 200, the most recent transfer of pre-1800 and fragile items came to 88 volumes.
